Gwen and Jack walk through the
IANTO (on earpieces)
Ok, guys. Bilis's shop is coming up twenty metres on your left.
The sign gives it away. A big black one with curly writing that says "A Stitch in Time - Timepieces repaired and refurbished". Jack and Gwen go in. The shop is full of ornate historical clocks, all ticking loudly.
GWEN
Wow. Some of this stuff must go back centuries.
JACK
He scavenges antique pieces from the past, brings them here, sells them for a profit - not a bad business plan.
BILIS
We all have to earn a living.
He appears on the stairs behind them. They turn around.
JACK
You're from 1941.
BILIS
As you were. Hello again.
GWEN
How can you be in two timezones at once?
BILIS
I can step across eras like you'd walk into another room. At first it was the most incredible gift. Now I know the reality. It's a curse.
GWEN
Why?
BILIS
I can see the whole of history, but I don't belong anywhere within it.
Jack looks at him, understanding. He comes forward.
BILIS
So, your return to this time had a price. Time is splintering. This city exists on a rift in time. The only way to make it right is to fully open that rift. Let it suck back what fell through.
JACK
No way. It's too dangerous.
GWEN
Can we do that?
BILIS
Of course you can. Isn't that right, Captain?
Jack says nothing. Gwen turns to him expectantly.
GWEN
Jack?
JACK
You've seen what happened. If we open that rift fully, millions of lives will be at risk.
BILIS
And yet if you don't, more will fall through, lives will be lost.
Jack turns away, laughs, then suddenly produces his gun. Bilis slowly raises his hands.
JACK
You know so much, you're coming back with us.
BILIS
I'm sorry.
And he vanishes. Gwen comes forward to make sure he's really not there. Jack puts his gun away.
JACK
Damnit! Trace the temporal activity around this location.
He reaches forward to tap Gwen's shoulder.
JACK
We need to find out where he is. Come on.
He tears out of the shop. Gwen follows, more slowly-
VOICE
Gwen.
-only to come face to face with Bilis. She goes to push past him, but he blocks the door.
BILIS
I am not your enemy.
GWEN
In the cells, why did you say you were sorry?
BILIS
Sometimes it's better to live in ignorance. Unless.... do you really want to know?
Oh yes, she does.
GWEN
Know what?
BILIS
Hold my hands, I'll show you.
Gwen looks at his proffered hands.
GWEN
Okay.
She goes to take them, but he snatches them away.
BILIS
Only if you're sure.
GWEN
I'm sure.
He holds out his hands. She takes them. Flashes of Gwen's flat, spattered with blood, Rhys lying dead on the floor in a pool of blood. Gwen lets go of his hands.
BILIS
I'm sorry.
GWEN
What did you just show me?
BILIS
The future.
Gwen runs out, past Jack who's still walking up the arcade.
JACK (irritably)
What took you so long?
She ignores him, still running.
JACK
Gwen? Gwen!
He runs after her, but she's gone.

Gwen throws open her front door, strides up the stairs. The living room is empty... and there's Rhys in the kitchen, safe and sound, kneeling on the floor.
RHYS
Is that you?
GWEN (shaken but relieved)
Yeah. It's me.
She puts her keys down and comes over to Rhys.
GWEN (laughs)
You're cleaning the oven!
RHYS
Aye. Somebody's got to, love.
GWEN
So, we've gotta go.
RHYS
Why? What's happened?
GWEN
We've gotta go, that's all.
RHYS
Let me finish here first.
GWEN
Rhys, we've gotta go - now.
RHYS
Oh, here we go again, always a hurry with you, ever since you started that bloody job-
He's cut off as Gwen digs a stun gun into his chest and fires. He falls down, unconscious.
GWEN
I'm sorry.

A bar. It's daytime, but the bar is dark. Owen is there alone, two empty glasses and one nearly in front of him. His world is falling apart around him.
VOICE
Owen. Owen.
He looks around. It's Diane.
OWEN
Oh, Jesus. Diane.
Flashes of them together.
OWEN
Jesus.
DIANE
I'm lost, Owen.
He reaches out and put a hand on her shoulder.
OWEN (whispering)
I can touch you. I don't understand. Where did you end up?
DIANE
Please... bring me back, Owen. You can do that, can't you?
He's helpless.
OWEN
I don't know. Everything's out of synch.
DIANA
Please.... please.... open the rift.
Someone walks across between them
BARMAN
Do you want another drink there, mate?
And Diane is gone. A tear rolls down Owen's face and he tries to control himself.

Gwen watches Rhys, unconscious in a cell, and jumps when he suddenly wakes.
GWEN
Woah. Take it easy.
RHYS
What's going on? Am I dreaming?
GWEN
This is where I work.
RHYS
You work in a prison?
GWEN
These are just the cells.
RHYS
You locked me in a cell? What the hell are you playing at?
GWEN
I was just trying to keep you safe.
RHYS
I was safe at home!
GWEN
No, you weren't. You really weren't.
RHYS
Listen here, Gwen. You better tell me exactly what's going on. Cos I've taken some shit over the last few months! I mean, what's all this?!
GWEN
Rhys, listen to me. I need you to trust me. Okay, it may not seem like it at the moment, but I am just trying to take care of you. I love you, sweetheart.
There's a bizarre noise. Rhys looks around.
RHYS
What the hell was that?
GWEN
Just try and relax, and I'll come back for you.
RHYS
What do you mean? You're not gonna leave me down here!
GWEN
I'm sorry.
RHYS
Gwen! Gwen!
GWEN
I'm sorry.
She leaves.
RHYS
Shit.

In the middle of the Hub, the remaining members are standing around. Jack watches as Gwen comes in.
JACK
Did he wake up?
GWEN
Yeah. Yeah, he did. Tosh, can you bring up the CCTV of the vaults? Just leave it on the screens. I know it sounds crazy...
TOSHIKO (nods)
Sure. No problem.
She taps at the PDA.
GWEN
Thank you... for helping me bring him here.
They nod.
TOSHIKO
I can't understand how Bilis was able to show you that vision.
Gwen looks at the CCTV. Rhys sits on the bench, head in his hands.
GWEN
It was so real, Tosh. I was in my flat. It felt like my flat, it had all the sounds of my flat. I touched the blood, I can still feel it on my hands, Rhys's blood.
Jack comes over and takes her hand.
JACK
Not gonna happen.
Gwen tries to be reassured.
JACK
Come on, there's still work to be done.
He goes off and just as the others are about to follow, the lights go out.
IANTO
What's going on?
TOSHIKO
We've got a security breach.
JACK
Right. Nobody panic.
Gwen tears off, shrieking-
GWEN
Rhys!

The door to the cell opens. Rhys looks at it, then goes out. It's dark, with flashing red lights. Weevils growl and hiss. Rhys goes to the door at the end but it won't open. Then he see Bilis at the other end of the room.
RHYS
Oh! Do you work here?
Bilis comes towards him.
RHYS
I'm Rhys, Gwen's boyfriend?
Bilis plunges a knife into Rhys. He gasps, and clutches at it. Bilis stabs him again and Rhys falls to the floor. Sideways, he sees Bilis go to the other end of the vault, clean his knife, then vanish. The lights come back on.

Ianto, at his desk, looks at Tosh, at hers. They can see the CCTV.

Gwen opens the door to the vault.
GWEN
No!
Rhys is lying, dead, on the floor in a pool of blood. Gwen drops to her knees and grabs his body. Jack also kneels beside him and looks for the pulse in Rhys's neck.
GWEN (hysterical)
We can bring him back!
JACK
There's nothing we can do.
GWEN
Yes there is!
Jack lets go of her and she cradles Rhys's body, sobbing.
GWEN
My boy, what are we going to do?
Jack rests his forehead on his arm, ignoring Gwen punching him and screaming.

The autopsy room. Rhys lies dead on the table. Tosh and Ianto stand helplessly on the stairs. Gwen is sitting beside Rhys while Jack cleans the blood off her hands. She doesn't seem to notice. There are tears in her eyes, but she's calm.
GWEN
I'll have to tell his family.
IANTO
We'll deal with it.
GWEN
The way you dealt with that porter the first time I met you? No. You won't "deal with him", Ianto.
TOSHIKO
Gwen, I'm so sorry.
Gwen laughs.
GWEN
You never even met him.
Jack finishes cleaning her hands and puts the stuff away.
GWEN
This is what happens here. We all end up alone. Not me.
She looks up at Jack.
GWEN
No way. You bring him back.
JACK
No
Jack walks away.
GWEN
The Resurrection Gauntlet.
IANTO
Was destroyed.
GWEN
We've gotta have something else.
JACK
I said no.
GWEN
No, there's something wrong with time, so we can go back and to the moment, the very moment-
JACK
Gwen!
GWEN
Well, there's gotta be something you can do, otherwise-
She suddenly gets angry
GWEN
-what's the fucking point of you?!
She throws herself at Jack, beating at him as he tries to hold her off.
GWEN
You bring him back!
JACK
Gwen...
GWEN
Do you understand me, Jack fucking Harkness?!
JACK
Gwen, I'm sorry.
GWEN
Do you?!
JACK
I'm so sorry. I'm sorry.
He cradles her, tears in his own eyes as he rocks her and she sobs against him. Owen comes rushing in, stops dead at the top of the stairs, taking in the scene. Rhys, dead on the table, Jack cradling Gwen, the others looking helpless.
OWEN
Oh shit. What happened?
He bounds down. Tosh looks delighted.
TOSHIKO
You came back!
OWEN (to Gwen)
Are you alright? You ok, you alright?
He attempts to take her from Jack, but she lashes out and attacks him.
GWEN
Don't touch me!
She backs away. Owen looks at Jack.
OWEN
How many other people have gotta suffer?
Jack looks at Gwen, now sitting beside Rhys again, then at Owen.
OWEN
I'm gonna fix this. I'm opening the Rift.
Jack looks at Ianto, who starts up the steps after him.
JACK
Make sure you stop him.
IANTO
No.
Tosh follows.
TOSHIKO
We're gonna help him.
Gwen gets up and follows too.
GWEN
Bilis, Bilis was right. He said open the Rift and everything goes back to normal. Owen's right. I'm gonna get Rhys back.
JACK
Gwen!
GWEN
No.
JACK
Gwen!

Owen is working at the computer.
IANTO
Enter emergency protocol one.
GWEN
Out the way, I'll do this.
Owen moves aside and Gwen types frantically, putting in an insanely long code.

In the autopsy room, Jack picks up his gun from the floor and comes after them
***
Upstairs
JACK
Get away from the computer, Gwen. This is a trap. All these cracks around the world are diversions. This is what Bilis wants.
OWEN
What are you afraid of, Jack?
Gwen has stopped, needing a password. Ianto notices.
IANTO
Rhea silver.
Gwen types it in. Jack goes for his gun and points it at Owen.
TOSHIKO
What the hell are you doing?
JACK
Final warning.
Gwen comes forward. He shifts the gun onto her.
GWEN
Come on, Jack.
JACK
You're a united front now. Toshiko, the poor girl who'll screw any passing alien who gives her a pendant. Owen, so strong he gets into a cage with a Weevil, desperate to be mauled. Ianto, hiding a Cyber-girlfriend in the basement. Your three comrades here pumped bullets into her, remember?
GWEN
I've gotta get Rhys back.
Jack lowers the gun to look scornfully at her.
JACK
Yeah. Cos you're so in love with Rhys that you spend half your time in Owen's bed.
Gwen lunges forward and punches him.
GWEN
Fuck you!
The gun skitters to the floor. Owen grabs it and points it at Jack.
OWEN (shouting)
We're relieving you of your command, captain! We're opening that Rift and getting back what we lost!
On the screen are the words "Retina prints of all Torchwood personnel required for authorisation".
GWEN
Shit!
Jack tries to leap up.
OWEN
Stay down!
JACK
You wanna be in charge, Owen? You gotta have significantly bigger balls.
He gets up to go for Owen, who shoots him, once through the head, twice through the chest. Jack falls dead to the floor. Gwen shrieks. They all look shocked, Owen included.
OWEN
I'm sick of people doubting me!
Gwen takes the gun off him, while Ianto drops to the floor beside Jack.
IANTO
What have you done?!

There's still work to be done. Four retina prints are taken.
GWEN
We've still gotta do Jack's.
Owen gets the lovely job of printing Jack's glazed staring dead eyes. The scans are authorised and the computer says "Warning: protocol activation will endanger Torchwood infrastructure" Gwen looks at the others, then at Rhys, lying dead in the autopsy room below. She selects ok. Sirens sound, the Weevils go crazy, Gwen shrieks as a hand bearing a very familiar wristband grabs her leg. Jack sits up, gasping, bullet holes gone.
OWEN
Oh my God, oh my God!
Electricity crackles up the fountain. The whole Hub shakes. The Roman soldier vanishes.
IANTO
Move, move, move!
GWEN
Help me get him up!
She and Ianto drag Jack to his feet, and supporting almost his whole weight, the team abandons the base. Pieces fall down, there are explosions, glass shatters, Rhys vanishes. And in the midst of all this chaos, Ianto still remembers to pick up Jack's coat on the way out. From above ground, there is no sign of the devastation going on underground.

In an alley, the ground is cracked and the team are still struggling along, holding Jack up. He has not taken this most recent death well.
OWEN
Keep moving!
GWEN
Right, Jack, everything is going to go back to normal.
They stop dead. Gwen lets go of Jack, who puts both hands on Ianto's shoulders. Ianto holds onto his arms to make sure he doesn't collapse again. Ahead of them, wearing a long coat, is Bilis. Gwen goes forward.
BILIS
From out of the darkness, he is come.
GWEN
What is he talking about?
BILIS
Son of the Great Beast. Cast out before time, chained in rock and imprisoned beneath the Rift.
GWEN
What?
BILIS
All hail Abaddon, the Great Devourer. Come to feast on life.
They look up as a massive beast with huge horns tramples across
BILIS
The whole world shall die beneath his shadow.

The monster strides across
***
BILIS
I look upon you, my God, and know my work is done.
Gwen turns and looks. He's vanished. There are dead people everywhere.
GWEN
How do we stop it? Tell me what to do, Jack.
Jack looks at his team. No one is arguing now.
JACK
Just you. Get me to an open space.
Ianto passes Jack over to Gwen.

The SUV stops in a field, across from the water. Jack gets out, hanging onto the car to stay upright. Gwen jumps from the driving seat.
GWEN
What are you gonna do?
She chases after Jack, who is stumbling along. He grabs her hand.
JACK
If Abaddon is the bringer of death, let's see how he does with me. If he feeds on life, then I'm an all-you-can-eat buffet.
GWEN
No, wait, wait, you're too weak!
The monster strides across
JACK
Get out of here - get - go!
He pushes her away. Gwen gives a sob.
JACK
Drive as fast as you can!
GWEN
Jack!
JACK
Bring it on!
The monster sees him and comes towards him, roaring. Jack looks up, waiting. The shadow hits him and he falls, screaming and writhing to the floor, but not dying. The monster roars and growls at him, and at last, energy flows from Jack's body into the monster's. The monster thrashes, then falls down dead, inches from Jack's body as Jack also falls back, dead.

Gwen rushes over.

Gwen holds Jack, sobbing.

Gwen's flat. She rushes in, to find Rhys standing there.
GWEN
You're here!
RHYS (confused)
Weren't you here just a minute ago?
GWEN
You're here!
She rushes over and kisses him.
GWEN
Go to bed, get some sleep and I'll be back for you.
She kisses him again.

Cold storage. Jack's body is lying on a drawer, propped up with the team around him as Gwen comes in. He's white as a sheet and very dead.
GWEN
You're certain?
OWEN
He's ice cold. No vital signs.
GWEN
He survived when you shot him. When I first joined, he said he couldn't die.
OWEN
He was wrong.
GWEN
I want to sit with him.
OWEN
Gwen...
GWEN
I want to sit with him.
Owen nods. The others leave. Gwen strokes Jack's hair.

Gwen sits by the body, leans over it, sits on the floor, waiting.
GWEN
Wake up.
More waiting.
GWEN
Jack?
***
The others watch on the CCTV.
OWEN
How long's she gonna do this?
Gwen strokes Jack's chest.
***
Ianto straightens some papers. He's trying not to cry. He crosses the office and takes Jack's coat from the peg, buries his nose in it.

The morgue. Tosh is there with Gwen.
TOSHIKO
It's been days. We have to face up to it. He's not coming back.
GWEN
I believe in him.
TOSHIKO
Let him go, Gwen.
She leaves. Gwen takes Jack's hand, still wearing his wristband, kisses his fingers. Then she gives him a kiss on the lips. She walks away. Then behind her-
JACK
Thank you.
She runs back and leans over him. Slowly, Jack opens his eyes.
GWEN
Ahhh.....
Jack gives a weak laugh.

In the hub, Ianto and Tosh are tidying up when Jack comes in, hand in hand with Gwen. Tosh sees him first. She runs over and hugs him. Then Ianto, looking a bit nervous. Jack grabs him and hugs him. Owen comes in and looks at him. Jack kisses Ianto, then looks at Owen, who walks over, slowly. They stand face to face.
OWEN
I'm...
JACK
I forgive you.
Owen nods, then Jack grabs him and hugs him as he sobs. The others watch.

Jack sits in his office, wearing his coat and flicking through papers. Gwen is sitting on the edge of his desk, watching.
GWEN
What's happened to the Rift?
JACK
It closed up when Abyddon was destroyed, but it's gonna be more volatile than ever.
GWEN
The visions we had... we all saw people we loved. What did you see?
JACK
Nothing. There was nothing.
GWEN
Jack? What would have tempted you? What visions would have convinced you to open the Rift?
JACK
The right kind of Doctor.
He gets up.
GWEN
Jack.
He walks out into the main hub.
JACK
Where are they with those coffees?
The hand in its jar is sparkling. Jack stares at it, then comes down to look at it more closely. There is the sound of the TARDIS. Jack's hair and coat are blown around, as are lots of papers. Gwen comes out too.
GWEN
Jack? Jack?
But there is no one there. The door opens and the other three come in, coffees in hand.
GWEN
Did you see Jack on your way in?
TOSHIKO
No.
OWEN
I thought we tidied up in here. What's the matter?
Gwen looks around.
GWEN
He was just here. Something's taken him, Jack's gone.
